About Energy Bill Action Plan
Energy Bill Action Plan publishes practical guides to lowering home energy bills: air sealing, insulation, heating and cooling, water heating, windows and doors, ducts and ventilation, and energy audits and rebates.
How we work
Our guides are researched from published sources: the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the IRS, national laboratories, and utility and state program pages. Every savings figure, cost, payback period and rating on a page is tied to a numbered source in that page’s Sources list, with the date we accessed it. We do not run a test lab and we do not install products; product comparisons are based on published specifications, ratings and the manufacturer’s own stated claims, labeled as such.
We start with the cheapest fixes, show the math behind savings estimates, and say plainly when a job needs a licensed professional, especially gas appliances, venting and electrical work.
Keeping it current
Rebates, incentives and energy prices change. When a program ends, we say so: for example, the federal 25C and 25D home energy tax credits ended after 2025. If you spot something out of date, email [email protected].
